Fort Wayne - Do You Remember?
This is pretty long, but what memories of old Ft.Wayne it brings back ....
Someone had a good time compiling this list -
1. You remember when WXKE Rock 104 was on the air for two hours, Doc West
was their only DJ, and why the call letters were XKE ?
2. You redeemed Gold and/or Green stamps......or both!
3. You know who Ann Colone was, and you may have been on Romper Room...
4. You know who Bob Sievers was, and could sing at least four bars of
the Little Red Barn"...
5. You remember seeing the tin mugs (or pitchers) from the TRF Beer Tent,
...and they're from the single digit years... (Three Rivers Festival)
6. You remember when Carrington field was next to the Coliseum, before Wizard's
Stadium was built
7. You remember alligators in the moat at Monkey Island in The Fort Wayne
Children's Zoo
8. You know where "Old" Fortmeyer's is...was?
9. You bagged sand in Flood of '82. or were around to see the deep snow of '78?
10. You know the DeHaven jingle, before they moved to " 5200 Illinois Road .
11. You know where the Hobby House was located downtown
12. You ate at the Hobby House on Anthony, were made dinner by Dave Thomas,
and thought,"Dave who?"
13. You braved the cold to see (watch) the window displays at W&D and you know what
W&D stands for ?
14. You remember Mother's on The Landing
15. You sat on Phil Steigerwald's lap...or took your kids to sit on his lap?
16. You know where the Old Crown brewery was located.
17. You know where Centlivre Brewery was located.
18. You knew what Powers was, and they had two locations.
19. You know why Spy Run is called that.
20. You know who Little Turtle is, why Anthony was Mad, and where Fallen
Timbers is.
21. You've taken the day off to go watch the Mad Anthonys
22. You remember FWCC was the best course in town (you'd heard)...
23. You remember the Holiday Inn at the Cloverleaf was a nice place to stay.
24. You know what IH stood for, and what a Scout looked like
25. You remember when IPFW had one building, DGTS was downtown, and the Art
School was just that...
26. You remember IPFW's second building was a TROM
27. You remember Sambo's on the Bypass
28. You remember Lucky Steer on the Bypass
29. You remember Mr. Wigg's
30. You remember Ben Franklin's
31. You remember Noble Roman's, especially watching the silent movies
32. You remember the Glenbrook Ice Rink.
33. You remember when " Belmont 's" didn't only refer to a liquor store.
34. You remember when I-69 was just two lanes.
35. You remember downtown before Headwaters Park & Courthouse Green.
36. You can properly pronounce the name "Goeglein" (GEG-line).
37. You remember the Coliseum before the expansion
38. You remember when Science Central opened....& what important business it WAS before?
39. You know what "Gladieux" is and remember it catching fire.
40. You remember the Apple Orchard at Glenbrook
41. You remember when the Roller Dome was THE place to be on Friday and Saturday nights
42. You've been to Coney Island more times than you can count & you had no problems walking
through the back door
43. You've eaten at the Elegant Farmer.
44. You remember when Memorial Stadium opened.
45. You remember when B. Dalton, Walden Books, Little Professor, and Readers
World were the biggest bookstores in town.
46. You remember when the Georgetown theater was full-price.
47. You filled a prescription at Hook's Pharmacy.
48. You remember South Side HS and North Side HS before the renovations.
49. You remember Southtown Mall.
50. You've been to Safety Village
51. You've bowled at almost every bowling alley in town.
52. You remember going to Lassus Stations without hearing from Jon
Lassus everytime.
53. You remember the old food court at Glenbrook.
54. You know what ten thousand burning tires looks like.
55. You remember the time before Jefferson Point when Glenbrook was the only
place to shop.
56. You know that it's "State Boulevard" not " State Street ".
57. You remember " Holiday 6" and saw movies there.
58. You remember when Southtown had more than Footlocker, Sears, and the
MCL Cafeteria.
59. You remember when the TRF Midway was cool, and you didn't have to worry
about getting shot.
60. You know what TRF stands for.
61. You remember when Lazer X and Ultrazone opened.
62. You've thrown apples on Johnny Appleseed's grave.
63. You remember going to McMillan Health Center in elementary school.
64. You remember Maplecrest when it was a two-lane, bumpy road that
" T 'd " into Rothman.Rd.
65. You remember the times before Wal-Mart and Meijer...when you actually
had to go to a grocery store.
67. You were ever on Happy's Place.
68. You remember listening to B106.3.
69. You remember the TRF Raft Race.
70. You ate at the Moonraker and shopped at Tepe's next door.
71. You went to Diamond Jims and still miss it.
72. You've eaten at Power's Hamburgers and remember its fried onions & being open
24 hours a day.
73. You've managed to cram yourself into Cindy's Diner and not feel
claustrophobic.
74. You remember when Hot 107.9 was Foxxy.
75. Remember the St. Mary's Catholic Church fire.
76. You remember when Dupont Road was out in the middle of nowhere.
77. You remember the days before 4-69.
78. You remember the flea market next to Hillcrest Bowl.
79. You know the Wizards original mascot was actually a wizard...not some
creepy dragon.
80. You knew about St. Francis College before the football team.
81. You bought something from Service Merchandise and had to wait for it to
come out on the conveyor belt.
82. You remember when the first Meijer opened.
83. You remember watching Steve Shine on WFFT Fox 55.
84. You remember when Mike's Carwash at Glenbrook was full service.
85. You remember when an Express Wash at Mike's cost less than five dollars
86. You remember the Trolley Restaurant on Wells St. next to where Edy's
is now.
87. You've marched in the TR Festival parade for some reason or another.
88. You remember Penguin Point on Spy Run.
89. You're pretty much guaranteed to find a wooden nickel or two
somewhere around in your house.
90. You can name all the Halls Restaurants (including those that have closed
and know where they are located.
91. You remember when Lincoln was based in Fort Wayne .
92. You remember Baer Field before it was "internationalized".
93. You remember when Keltch Pharmacy was it's own store, not a part of
Scott's
94. You know what "Froggy's Pad" was.
95. You remember the Seyfert's factory on Hwy 3/Lima Rd. and what it
smelled like.
96. You know that Best Buy was originally located where Borders is now
in Coldwater Road and that it was The Children's Palace before Best Buy.
97. You remember when Speice just sold shoes.
98. You know where Kittle's is even though you never shop there.
99. You know that our Pizza Huts are way better than anything outside of
Dick Freelands Franchise.
100. You remember when Vernon Jordan was shot at the Marriott.
101. You remember when the Citilink buses were PTC.
102. You remember when Win Moses was mayor.
103. You know the difference between St. Joe Blvd , St. Joe Rd , St. Joe Center
Road, St. Joe River Dr , and Upper St. Joe Center Rd.
104. You can finish the sentence, "If you're not on Goshen road..."
105. You remember never being able to find parking at the downtown
library.
106. You know what St. Francis' campus looked like before the renovations and
expansions.
107. You remember when the police department was at Southgate .
108. You remember Showbiz Pizza before Chuck E. Cheese.
109. You've ever had a birthday party or attended one at the Roller Dome
north or south).
110. You remember Roller Dome North before they renovated it.
111. You remember Tilt at Glenbrook
112. You remember when Coventry 13 was the main movie theater.
113 Do remember Denny's on Lima Road .
114. You've complained aloud in your car tht St. Joe & St. Joe Center is a
screwed up intersection.
115. You were pissed that northwest Indiana got to keep 219 when the area
codes were split up
116. You've drank out of the lion shaped water fountain at the zoo.
117. You've eaten at Atz's ice cream shop
118. It doesn't bother you in the least that a road can change names 3 or
more times in the course of a few miles.
119. You know the story behind Harry Baals Drive.
120. You remember the GTE Tower .
121. You've eaten at Willie's.
122. You remember Damon's and the fact that the place was cursed.
123. You remember Roger's, Lynn's, and Cub Foods.
124. Even if you know Scott's was generally overpriced, you're still pissed
Kroger bought them out.
125. You remember Georgetown before the renovation.
126. You remember when there was more than one Big Boy.
127. You remember when the 14/69 Automall was built.
128. You remember when Roger's grocery baggers loaded your bags in your
car for you.
129. You drove on Harrison Street when it was one, continuous street.
130. You remember when Amtrak stopped in Fort Wayne
131. You miss being told the "Fort Wayne National Bank Time".
132. Bob Rohrman annoys you.
133. You've talked to Croaky the Frog.
134. You remember when Lutheran Hospital was on Fairfield .
135. You remember Hudson 's at Glenbrook
136. You've know the rumors about Devil's Hollow at night.
137. You remember the Children's Place in the mall having the little slide
and stuff at the back of the store.
138. You know that the television was invented by Fort Wayne resident Philo
T. Farnsworth.
139. You remember when the ACPL summer reading program actually had good
prizes.
140. You've gone sledding down the huge hills at Franke Park , Shoaff Park .
141. You remember Furrows behind Southtown.
142. You've ridden on the BMX track.
143. You've had your picture taken while sitting in the joey pouch at
the zoo.
144. You remember listening to Charlie Butcher on 97.3 WMEE.
145. You know that the Detroit Pistons used to be the Fort Wayne Zollner
Pistons
146. You know who Ollie Fretter was. ("Ooops, Ollie overbought!")
147. You remember Maloley's
148. You shopped at Patterson-Fletcher and/or Hutner's Paris.
149. You bought donuts at Murphy's downtown and sat at the soda fountain
counter.
150. You ate at the Shuttle restaurant on East State Blvd.
151. You went to the outdoor movie on Bluffton Rd
152. You remember the Jefferson Pharmacy and Buschbaum's.
153. You remember when the police officers walked the beat and wore white
uniform hats.
154. You remember Louie's Chop Suey on Harrison .
155. You remember the Piano Bar and that Jerry Lee Lewis played there.
156. You shopped at Montgomery Ward at Northcrest then came back at nite
to dance at The Sands.
157. You remember calling for an ambulance and police officers showed up in
a station wagon.
158. You remember when the Clyde Theater opened on Bluffton Rd.
159. You remember when the women's professional baseball team, The Daisies, played at Memorial Park.
